All Buddies are subject to appropriate DBS checks and undergo Safeguarding training based on a strict set of protocols designed to protect both the Buddy and the child during remote interaction.
Apart from the Safeguarding training mentioned above, Buddies are trained in how to listen to a child read in order to ensure learning and development are an overall positive experience. In addition, Buddies are trained in the use of online technology.
We are anxious to ensure that no child or Buddy misses out on the opportunity to read and to listen. Whilst we hope that most people will have access to a device they can use, we have limited resources that should enable you to take part. Please don't let a lack of technology stop you from getting in touch.
The scheme is aimed at all primary school aged children. However, if you have approached us from home, rather than through school, we ask you to let us know if your child has any specific needs at the outset so that we can determine whether we can help you. In just the same way, the scheme is available to anyone who would value the experience of listening to a child read as a Buddy. However, we ask you to let us know if you have any specific needs, that may need accommodating, when you get in touch.
Ideally, we hope to match children and their Buddies so that they work together over the period that the child wishes to read. However, some times this is not logistically possible and cannot be guaranteed. How frequently they meet is determined by either their school or their guardian (if at home) and the Buddy themselves. However, our recommended reading time per child is for twenty minutes at least once a week. and usually takes place within normal school hours.
There is no charge for the service. However, we do ask all those taking part, other than the Buddies themselves, to consider making a small, one-off donation if they are able to afford it.
