Helping children become better readers remotely
We aim to improve the reading skills of children by bringing them together remotely with those who would value the experience of hearing them read and, by doing so, enhance the mental health and well being of the Story Buddy Online community.
Covid-19 has radically changed the way we live our lives today and, without doubt, will significantly shape the way we go about day to day activities in the future. We have learnt to stay at home and practise social distancing. For some of us though, this practice was already the norm, either through illness or loneliness but certainly not always through choice.

Children (the readers) had a disrupted school year in 2020, the majority waiting until September to return full time. This year, we find ourselves in the same situation. For all children, school is a different place with social distancing and enhanced hygiene practices affecting all activities and intermittent quarantining continue to disrupt learning. Schools are no longer able to rely on parent volunteers coming into school to listen to children read as they did before - a vital role in helping children to progress and develop their reading, writing and comprehension skills.

Staying at home has enabled us to embrace all the technologies available to help us continue our lives as best we can, accessing information, services and our friends remotely whilst protecting ourselves and others. During this time, some children have been lucky enough to read to others remotely, such as their grandparents (Buddies), fulfilling the child's learning needs and, happily, providing their grandparents with the highlight of their day - social interaction, a feeling of usefulness and a shared experience.
